Viola da gamba
The gamba violas - which may be soprano, alto, tenor, bass and double bass - were used mainly in the Renaissance and Baroque periods, although they are still present today in the contemporary repertoire. They usually have 6 strings, flat bottom and notched front, differing from the instruments of the violin family, which have carved background and front. The bow is held with the palm of the hand facing up.
